Old Fashioned Cleaning Tips – That Still Banish Dirt Just As Well!

There is always a new way of doing something, whether it be a brilliant all in one toilet cleaner, or a spray that relinquishes stains, you can always find an innovative new product. But when these amazing methods weren’t available, we had to rely on some old-fashioned cleaning methods. Here are our favourite cleaning tips that have survived the generations – and we can see why!

Sweaty, Smelly Shoes?

The weather is certainly staying on our side at the moment, and we are all enjoying long walks in the sun. This can mean that our shoes get a little over used and start to show their wear (in the smell department anyway!). All you need to do to get them smelling as good as new is fill a pair of old socks with nice smelling herbs and spices, tie at the bottom, and leave in your shoes between uses! We love the smell of the following –

  • Rosemary
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Lemon Peel
  • Lavender

Protect with Polish!

It is easy for wooden furniture and surfaces to become dull over time. To not only brighten them up, but to also protect them from spills you need to read this tip! Simply add 1 tablespoon of lemon essential oil to 1 cup of olive oil and mix. Then apply this to a rag and rub into the wooden surface. You have to trust this one – the results are amazing!

Stubborn old stains?

Before fancy cleaners dominated the market, a simple solution to getting rid of tough stains was to use glycerine. All you have to do is mix 1 part glycerine with two parts water and rub it into the stain. Then let sit for an hour, rub off the solution, and rinse! A great way to clean without any nasty chemicals!

 Forgot about the drains?

We all know it is important to keep our homes clean, but do we forget about where we send the dirt? Down the drain! To keep your drain clean and running smoothly, simply add 1 cup of baking soda to the drain, and then follow with the same amount of white vinegar. If you want it to smell fragrant, then simply rinse and then add some essential oil drops – it really is that simple, the smell will linger in your home for days!
