How spring cleaning can BOOST your health

As the sun comes out and the days get longer, what better excuse for spring cleaning. Mop the floors, throw open the windows and get your house in sparkling condition.

But as well as improving the appearance of our homes, spring cleaning is an excellent way to improve our health, both mentally and physically.

Benefits of cleaning include reducing anxiety, burning calories, increasing our step count, boosting endorphins and relaxing us in times of trouble. Many people speak of how cleaning and keeping things organised is a way of control when other forces in their lives are tumultuous such as after grief or divorce.

In the UK, Instagram favourite Mrs Hinch (@mrshinchhome) has been vocal on how cleaning helped to reduce her anxiety and fight off panic attacks. Meanwhile, over four million copies of Marie Kondo’s (@mariekondo) book ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up’ have been sold worldwide as millions of us try to ‘spark joy’ by de-cluttering our lives.

On the other hand, a lack of respect for one’s surroundings can be an early sign of depression as people lack the motivation to clean and dishes pile up in the sink.

There are not just mental benefits either, research by Fitbit found scrubbing floors burnt 258 calories an hour while mopping burnt off 238 an hour. Cleaning gives your muscles a workout, raises your heart rate and can help you lose weight- all without stepping foot in a gym.

So what have you got to lose, grab your SPh2ONGE and get cleaning!
