Cleaning Tips For Busy Mums!

No matter how hard we work, we still only have 24 hours in a day (even if we would like a couple more!). For busy mums, this can means that the amount of time we have to clean every day gets smaller and smaller – other commitments will always take priority (go all the hard-working mums out there!). We have dedicated this blog to all the mums on-the-go who need the best tips to save some valuable time in the day! If we have any expert quick cleaners out there, make sure to comment your own cleaning tips and tricks!

Get the kids involved

Ok, this may sound easier said than done, but all you have to do is give an incentive as children always work off of reward! This could be as simple as a bar of chocolate, or a slightly later bed time! Here are some child friendly cleaning tasks based on age –

2-3 years’ old (with supervision!)

  • Feed the pets
  • Put dirty clothes in the washing basket
  • Wipe up mess
  • Put toys away

4-5 years’ old (a little less supervision!)

  • Make the bed
  • Fold up their clothes (only one simple fold needed)
  • Help pull out weeds in the garden

6-7 years’ old

  • Sort washing into light and dark
  • Set the table for dinner
  • Pack their school bag
  • Pack their school lunch
  • Tidy their bedroom

8-9 years’ old

  • Load and unload the dishwasher
  • Help with dinner
  • Help take the pets out
  • Wipe down surfaces
  • Clean their room

Keep on top of small tasks!

Just because a task is small, doesn’t mean it won’t get bigger! If left too long, surfaces will get dirtier and jobs will become bigger. If you see something that needs a 5 second clean, then do it when you see it! If you leave it longer, then you will have to take 30 minutes to clean it instead – this is the best way to minimise the impact of big task on your day (don’t create them!)

Take a 10 minutes’ tidy!

Once the kids are in bed and you can finally have some you time, take 10 minutes to tidy any obvious clutter. This involves putting toys away and gathering up crumbs. BUT, spend no more than 10 minutes – you only need to get the house in order! If you get rid of clutter at the start of the evening, then you can relax all evening and wake up to a calm and tidy house (we know mornings can be difficult!)

Accept that your house will never be a show home!

Don’t ever compare your home to one without kids – just don’t! Your home has creative little minds running around and destroying the place, but that’s ok. No one is expecting you to be a super mum, so if the house is a mess but you want a cup of tea, have one!
